Etymology
Pui comes from Latin pullus, meaning a young animal, especially a chick or foal. Pullus is usually traced back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning small or few, the same root behind Latin paucus (few). Romance languages kept close relatives of the word: Italian has pollo and French has poulet, both meaning chicken. Romanian narrowed the word to everyday chicken use while also keeping the broader sense of any animal's young.
