Etymology
Pedeapsă came into Romanian from a South Slavic source, close to Bulgarian pedepsa, meaning punishment. That Slavic word was itself borrowed earlier from Byzantine Greek paideuein, which meant to train or educate a child. The sense narrowed over time from disciplining a child to punishing a wrongdoer, since correction was once seen as part of upbringing.
