Etymology
Plânge comes from Latin plangere, which meant to strike the chest in grief and, by extension, to lament loudly. Romanian kept this as its everyday verb for crying, unlike Spanish and French, which built their words for crying on a different Latin verb, plorare. It belongs to the core inherited Latin stock of Romanian, the layer of vocabulary that survived despite centuries of Slavic and other neighboring influence.
