Etymology
Plângere comes from the verb a plânge, to cry or weep, which descends from Latin plangere, meaning to strike the breast in grief or to lament loudly. The noun form kept the old literary sense of weeping or lament, but in modern Romanian it shifted mainly into legal and administrative language, where it means a formal complaint filed with police, a court, or an office. English complain and plaintiff come from the same Latin root, by way of Old French.
