Etymology

Romanian borrowed "spaniol" from French "espagnol" in the nineteenth century, during a wave of French and Italian loans that replaced or supplemented older Slavic and Greek vocabulary. The French word itself traces back through Old Occitan or Old French forms to the Latin name "Hispania" for the Iberian peninsula. "Hispania" is pre-Roman in origin, likely Phoenician or Iberian, so it does not have a clear Indo-European root.
