Etymology
The verb comes from Latin pluere, to rain, through the Vulgar Latin form plovere. Romanian kept the impersonal use: the verb only takes a third-person singular subject, since rain has no grammatical agent. The Latin root also gave Romanian the noun ploaie, rain, and the adjective ploios, rainy.
