Etymology
Poftim comes from the verb a pofti, meaning to invite or to wish. That verb was borrowed into Romanian from a Slavic source related to Old Church Slavonic pohtěti, to desire or crave. Poftim is literally the first person plural present form, we invite, but over time it froze into a fixed polite formula used when offering something or inviting someone in. The same grammaticalization produced poftiți, the formal version used for a single respected person or a group.
