Etymology

Romanian borrowed "preveni" from French "prévenir" in the nineteenth century, during the wave of Romance relatinization that reshaped the modern Romanian lexicon. The French verb itself descends from Latin "praevenire," built from "prae-" (before) and "venire" (to come). The literal sense, "to come before," shifted to "to act ahead of a problem," hence "to prevent," and in French also "to inform someone ahead of time."
