Etymology
Răspândi is built from the Slavic-derived prefix răs- (from raz-, meaning apart or in different directions) attached to a Slavic verbal root. The same prefix shows up in other Romanian verbs of Slavic origin that denote dispersal or reversal, such as răsturna (to overturn) and răscoli (to stir up). Romanian dictionaries compare the word to a Bulgarian verb with a similar sense of scattering.
