Etymology

Primire is a noun formed from the verb a primi ("to receive") plus the suffix -re, which turns a verb into an abstract action noun, much like English "-ing". Romanian is unusual among Romance languages: instead of continuing Latin recipere (source of French recevoir, Spanish recibir), it built primi from Latin primus, "first". The underlying sense was something like "to take first place with, to accept", which shifted to the general meaning "to receive".
