Etymology
Prințesă is built from prinț, a 19th-century borrowing from French prince, plus the feminine suffix -esă, itself modeled on the French feminine ending -esse. Prince goes back to Latin princeps, meaning the one who takes first place. Romanian adopted this whole word family during its modernization period, when French vocabulary reshaped much of the language's terms for rank and titles.
