Însă comes from the Latin demonstrative form ipsa, meaning "she herself" or "that very one." Romanian took this emphatic pronoun stem and, over time, shifted it into a connecting word meaning "however." The same Latin root, combined with the prefix în-, also built the Romanian emphatic pronouns însumi, însuți, and însuși.
