Etymology
Procuratură entered Romanian in the twentieth century as a borrowing from Russian прокуратура, itself from Latin procuratura, tied to the verb procurare, meaning to take care of or manage on someone's behalf. Romania adopted the Soviet-modeled legal system after 1945, and from 1952 to 1968 Procuratura was the official name of the state prosecution body. In 1968 the institution was renamed Parchet, so procuratură now sounds historical or foreign in Romania, though it remains the current official term in the Republic of Moldova.
