Etymology
Romanian borrowed "dog" from French "dogue", which names mastiff-type breeds. The borrowing entered Romanian as part of the wave of French loanwords in the 19th century, when much of Romania's modern vocabulary was rebuilt on French models. The ultimate origin of French "dogue" itself is debated among etymologists, and it is not confirmed to share a root with English "dog".
