Romanian borrowed "puls" from French "pouls" during the nineteenth century, when the language absorbed a large wave of scientific and medical vocabulary from French. The French word itself descends from Latin "pulsus", the past participle of "pellere", meaning to drive or strike. The term originally described the beat felt at the wrist as the heart drives blood through the arteries.
