Particular entered Romanian from French particulier, itself from Latin particularis, an adjective built on particula, the diminutive of pars, partis, meaning part or share. The Latin root pars traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to allot or grant. The word kept its Latin sense of belonging to a single part rather than the whole, which is why Romanian uses it both for private and for specific.
