Etymology
"Spună" is the third-person subjunctive form of the verb "a spune" (to say, to tell). Romanian is unusual among Romance languages in that its verb for "to say" comes from Latin "expōnere" (to set forth, expound), not from "dicere" like French "dire" or Spanish "decir". Over centuries the initial "ex-" wore down and the word settled into "spune", with meaning shifting from "to expound" to the general "to say".
