Etymology
"Ridic" is the first-person singular present of the Romanian verb "a ridica" ("to raise, to lift"). It descends from Vulgar Latin "*rigidicare," a verb built on Latin "rigidus" ("stiff, rigid"), and the original sense of "to make stiff" or "to straighten up" shifted over time to "to lift." "Rigidus" in turn goes back to the PIE root *h₃reǵ- ("to move in a straight line, to direct"), the same root behind Latin "rex" ("king") and English "right."
