Ridicol entered Romanian from French ridicule, which in turn comes from Latin ridiculus, an adjective built on ridere, meaning to laugh. Romanian took in this word during the nineteenth century, a period when it borrowed heavily from French and Latin to modernize its vocabulary. The native Romanian verb for laughing, a râde, descends directly from the same Latin root, but through inherited speech rather than borrowing.
