Etymology

Poliție entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as a borrowing from French police. French police in turn came from Latin politia, meaning civil administration, which was taken from Ancient Greek politeia, meaning citizenship or government, itself built on polis, meaning city-state. The word arrived in Romanian alongside a wave of French-derived administrative and institutional vocabulary during the country's modernization period.
