Etymology

Romanian borrowed "rutină" from French "routine" in the nineteenth century, part of a large wave of French loanwords that reshaped Romanian vocabulary. French "routine" itself grew out of "route" (road, path) plus the suffix "-ine", so the original sense was something like the beaten path one follows out of habit. "Route" traces back through Vulgar Latin "rupta (via)", literally a broken-through way, from the verb "rumpere", to break.
