Etymology

Romanian borrowed "autoritate" from French "autorité" and Latin "auctoritas" during the 19th-century re-Latinization of the language, when many native Slavic-influenced terms were replaced or supplemented by French and Latin loans. The Latin root "auctor" (originator, guarantor) itself comes from the verb "augere", meaning to increase or bring about. The spelling with "ț" instead of "t" seen in some older texts reflects an earlier, now obsolete orthographic convention; the standard modern form is "autoritate".
