Etymology
Salvare is the verbal noun of a salva, "to save, rescue." Romanian re-latinized much of its vocabulary in the 19th century through French and Italian, and a salva entered the language this way, tracing back to Latin salvare, "to save, heal," itself from salvus, "safe, unharmed." English save comes from the same Latin root by a different route, through Old French sauver.
