Etymology
Scăpat is the past participle of a scăpa, which comes from Vulgar Latin excappare, literally to get out of one's cape. The same Vulgar Latin verb gave rise to escape words across the Romance languages. Over time the core sense widened from a physical getaway to any release: from danger, from an illness, from a burden, or even from one's own grip on an object.
