Etymology
Romanian borrowed șef from French chef in the 19th century, during a period when Romanian intellectuals replaced Ottoman and Slavic administrative vocabulary with French and Latin terms. French chef itself descends from Old French chief, from Latin caput, meaning head. The sense shifted from a literal body part to the person at the head of a group.
