Etymology

Romanian borrowed "stop" directly from French and German in the nineteenth century, both of which had taken it from English "stop." The English verb goes back to a Vulgar Latin form meaning to plug something with tow or fiber, from Latin "stuppa," itself from Greek. Romanian kept the word unchanged in spelling and close in sound, using it as both a noun and a command.
