Etymology
Sfoară came into Romanian from a Slavic source, close to Bulgarian svora and Ukrainian svora, which named a leash or cord used to couple hunting dogs together. Romanian broadened the sense to any thin cord used for tying or binding. No further Indo-European root behind the Slavic word is established, so this is best treated as a Slavic loan rather than pushed back to a deeper root.
