Sigur/sigură comes from Latin securus, meaning free from care or safe. Latin securus was built from se- (without) and cura (care, worry). The same Latin root passed into French and then English, giving "sure" and "secure". Romanian kept both senses of the Latin word: certainty and physical safety.
