Etymology

Zahăr entered Romanian from a Slavic intermediary, likely Bulgarian or Old Church Slavonic zahar. That form traces back through Persian shekar to Sanskrit śarkarā, which originally meant gravel or grit and came to mean crystallized sugar. The same Persian-Arabic chain also gave English sugar, but through a separate route via Arabic sukkar and Old French sucre, so the two words are distant relatives rather than direct borrowings from each other.
