Soartă comes from Latin sors, sortis, meaning lot, chance, or destiny, the same word that gave English sort and consort. In Roman culture a sors was literally a lot drawn to decide an outcome, and the meaning widened to cover the fate that outcome sealed for a person. Romanian kept this sense largely intact while other Romance languages built parallel words such as Italian sorte and French sort.
