Etymology
Romanian borrowed "social" from French "social" in the nineteenth century, as part of a wave of Latinate and French vocabulary that modernized the language. The French word goes back to Latin "socialis", meaning allied or pertaining to companionship, itself built on "socius", a companion or ally. Some etymologists trace "socius" further to a Proto-Indo-European root for following or accompanying, though this last step is less certain than the Latin link.
