Etymology

Romanian borrowed "distra" from French "distraire", which goes back to Latin "distrahere": the prefix "dis-" (apart) plus "trahere" (to pull, draw). The original sense of pulling the mind away from its usual concerns shifted to mean amusing or entertaining someone. Romanian already had a native word from the same Latin root, "a distrage" (to distract), so "distra" exists as a later French-based doublet with a narrower, friendlier meaning.
