Etymology
The origin of "băiat" is not settled. Romanian dictionaries mark it as being of uncertain origin, since it does not come from Latin like most core Romanian vocabulary. Some scholars have proposed a link to Cuman, a now-extinct Turkic language once spoken in parts of medieval Romania, but this remains a hypothesis rather than a settled fact. No Proto-Indo-European root is claimed for it.
