Etymology

Același comes from the demonstrative pronoun acela, meaning that one, fused with și, an old identity particle related to Latin sic, meaning thus. Attaching și to a demonstrative turns it from that one into that same one. Romanian applies this same pattern across gender and number, giving același, aceeași, aceiași, and aceleași. Most other Romance languages instead built their word for same from Latin ipse or medietas, so this particular formation is a Romanian development.
