Etymology
Romanian borrowed "calm" from French "calme" during the nineteenth century, when a wave of French vocabulary entered Romanian as the language modernized. French "calme" itself came from Italian "calma", which traces to Late Latin "cauma" (midday heat), from Greek "kauma" (burning heat). The sense drifted from scorching stillness at noon to windless, still seas, and from there to the general idea of calm.
