Romanian dictionaries treat it as a Black Sea fisherman's term for the grey mullet, kept separate from the unrelated adjective lis, lisă, meaning bald, which does come from a Slavic word. Some sources connect the fish name to a South Slavic word for the same species, but the link is not confirmed.
