Etymology
Preot comes from Latin presbyter, which Latin itself borrowed from Greek presbyteros, meaning elder. Romanian inherited the word directly from spoken Latin in the region, the same source that gave English priest by a separate path through Old English preost. The underlying Greek term originally marked a senior member of the early Christian community before it narrowed to the modern sense of an ordained priest.
