Etymology
Speriat is the past participle of the verb a speria, meaning to frighten or scare. The verb goes back to Latin pavere, to be afraid, joined with the reflex of the prefix ex-, which in Romanian regularly weakens to an initial s-. The same pattern of ex- collapsing to s- shows up in other Romanian verbs, such as a spăla from ex- plus lavare.
