Etymology
Romanian numerals are mostly inherited from Latin, but "sută" is an exception. It comes from Old Slavic "sъto" (hundred), borrowed during centuries of close contact with Slavic-speaking populations in the early medieval period. A feminine noun ending was then attached to fit Romanian grammar. The Slavic source word itself descends from an ancient Indo-European numeral, so "sută" is a distant cousin of the Latin-based numerals that surround it in Romanian.
