Etymology

Televiziune entered Romanian in the mid-20th century as a borrowing from French télévision. The French word was coined from Greek tēle- ('far') and Latin visio ('sight, vision'), a hybrid formation typical of new technology terms in the early 1900s. Romanian, like most European languages, adopted the term ready-made as the technology spread, adding the native noun suffix -iune. The Latin root visio derives from videre, 'to see'.
