Etymology

Termen comes from Latin terminus, meaning boundary or limit, reinforced in Romanian by French terme. The original sense of a fixed boundary point narrowed over time to mean a fixed date or period, and by extension a fixed word for a concept. Romanian kept the neuter gender and gave it an irregular plural, termeni, on the pattern of other old neuter nouns.
