Etymology
Romanian borrowed "dejun" from French "déjeuner". The French word originally meant to break an overnight fast, and depending on region and era it could refer to the first meal of the day or to the midday meal. French "déjeuner" goes back to Vulgar Latin "disjejunare", built from "dis-" (undoing) and "jejunare" (to fast), itself from Latin "jejunus" (fasting, empty-stomached). Romanian kept the noun mainly for the midday meal, and later added "mic dejun" (small dejun) for breakfast.
