Etymology
Romanian "univers" comes from French "univers" and Latin "universum". The Latin word derives from "universus", meaning whole or entire, built from "unus" (one) and "versus", the past participle of "vertere" (to turn). Romanian adopted the term in the nineteenth century as part of a broader wave of French and Latin borrowings that modernized its vocabulary. The word names the whole of space, matter, and time, and is also used for a person's own private world of thought.
