Etymology
Toaletă entered Romanian from French toilette. The French word was originally a diminutive of toile, meaning a small cloth, since it named the cloth laid over a dressing table. Usage shifted from the cloth to the act of grooming and dressing, then to the room where that happened, and finally to the fixture itself. Romanian borrowed the word in this later, room and fixture sense during the nineteenth century wave of French influence on the language.
