Etymology
Romanian borrowed "tonă" from French "tonne" in the 19th century, as part of the wave of French vocabulary that entered the language during modernization. The French word traces back to a medieval Latin term for a large cask, "tunna", which was also used to measure liquid volume before it settled into a unit of mass. The same root gave English "ton" and "tun".
