Coloană comes from Latin columna, meaning an upright pillar. The word entered Romanian in the nineteenth century through French colonne and Italian colonna, part of a broader wave of Latinate vocabulary that replaced or supplemented older Slavic-influenced terms. The same Latin root gave English column directly.
