Etymology
The origin of treaptă is not firmly established. Romanian dictionaries generally list it as being of uncertain origin, without a securely traced source in Latin or in the Slavic languages that shaped much of the everyday Romanian vocabulary. It appears in the language from the earliest surviving texts, already carrying both its literal sense of a stair step and its figurative sense of a stage or degree.
