Romanian took "picnic" from French "pique-nique" in the modern era, alongside many other borrowings that entered the language during its 19th and 20th century westward reorientation. The French word itself appeared in the late 1600s as a playful rhyming compound, likely built from "piquer" (to pick at) and the nonsense syllable "nique". Its deeper origin before that point is not established, so no verified ancestral root exists. The word spread across Europe largely unchanged in form.
