Etymology

Romanian borrowed "multiplu" in the nineteenth century from French "multiple", which traces to Latin "multiplex" (also "multiplus"), a compound of "multi-" (many) and "-plex" (fold, from the verb "plicare", to fold). This entered as part of a wave of French and Latin learned words that reshaped Romanian's vocabulary during its modernization. The everyday Romanian word "mult" (much, many) descends from the same Latin base "multus" but arrived through direct inheritance, not borrowing, so the two words look related but took different historical paths.
