Etymology

Grupă came into Romanian through French groupe or Italian gruppo, a word of Germanic origin that originally referred to a round mass or knot. Romanian attached its own feminine noun ending, -ă, to the borrowed root grup-, which set grupă apart from the masculine grup. The feminine form settled into narrower, more official uses, such as a class of small children or a category of blood.
